Oregon Senate Democrats reject another jobs bill

Oregon Senate Republicans

Salem, OR – Wednesday Oregon State Senators voted on a bill that would establish seedbeds for job creation around Oregon, empowering struggling counties and spurring economic vitality throughout the state.  Unfortunately, the bill was defeated on a party line vote, 16 to 14.

“This bill would have given a shot of economic steroids to the communities in Oregon struggling the most,” said Senator Chuck Thomsen (R-Hood River).  “The legislature must take action to create an environment where businesses can succeed.”

Senate Bill 1592 would empower the most downtrodden rural counties with the ability to take control of their economic destiny. The bill would allow Oregon counties with 50,000 residents or less explicit control over Oregon land use zoning and planning regulations if that county had not seen an increase in population over the last 10 years.

“Senate Bill 1592 would give  struggling counties  the ability to strategically waive suffocating regulations that hamper growth and prosperity in rural Oregon,” said  Senator Doug Whitsett (RKlamath Falls).

Despite opposition from Majority Democrats, Senate Republicans continue to press the Blueprint for Prosperity agenda.  The agenda focuses on  creating an environment in Oregon where business can grow and succeed and families can thrive.

“The  Democratic agenda of regulate and spend is creating an economic desert,” said Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day). “I’m tired of the status quo, and so are all Oregonians.”

There is absolutely no information in this article about how this is a “jobs bill”. There’s plenty of boilerplate BS, but nothing about what this bill would do to create jobs.

  • JoelinPDX

Well, it’s far from being “boilerplate” and it does give a couple of particulars about the bill. So, saying “There is absolutely no information” kind of indicates you need to take another look at the article.

It is kind of typical for Democrats to vote against jobs though…they are, after all, just following the lead of their master Lord Obozo.

Boilerplate that doesn’t say anything.“’This bill would have given a shot of economic steroids to the communities in Oregon struggling the most,’ said Senator Chuck Thomsen (R-Hood River).”More boilerplate that doesn’t say anything.“The legislature must take action to create an environment where businesses can succeed.”Once again, it’s just empty boilerplate.”Senate Bill 1592 would empower the most downtrodden rural counties with the ability to take control of their economic destiny.”Still more boilerplate, with the added bonus of the BS jargon word “empower.”"The bill would allow Oregon counties with 50,000 residents or less explicit control over Oregon land use zoning and planning regulations if that county had not seen an increase in population over the last 10 years.”Okay, that says one thing that the bill actually does, but it doesn’t say how doing this would create jobs. “’Senate Bill 1592 would give  struggling counties  the ability to strategically waive suffocating regulations that hamper growth and prosperity in rural Oregon,’ said  Senator Doug Whitsett (RKlamath Falls).”Boilerplate.”Despite opposition from Majority Democrats, Senate Republicans continue to press the Blueprint for Prosperityagenda.  The agenda focuses on  creating an environment in Oregon where business can grow and succeed and families can thrive.”Boilerplate.“’The  Democratic agenda of regulate and spend is creating an economic desert,’ said Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day). ‘I’m tired of the status quo, and so are all Oregonians.’”Boilerplate.

I guess Oregon Catalyst, as well as the Oregon Republican Party, counts on their followers disengaging their brains. If you folks would think about this stuff, you’d realize what a big, stinking pile it is.

I apologize for the bad formatting. There were line returns when I wrote it, and for some reason they disappeared when it was posted.

This again goes back to private property.  The STATE controls everything.  Private citizens, local communities, must go to the STATE for permission. The STATE in its benign wisdom ALLOWS citizens to have economic prosperity but only if it approves.  and who is the STATE to say one community can do one thing and another community cannot do the same.  Then they want to tax a company (facebook data center) just because.

Then they want to tax a company (facebook data center) just because.

Because a Facebook data center wouldn’t use any of the public infrastructure.  Wouldn’t use roads, drainage systems, police, fire, court systems.  Nothing.   You wouldn’t even know they were there.

      • Ramalama

Not to mention an educational system to provide effective employees.

      • Bored

Obviously you know nothing about data centers.

        • 3H

Feel free to educate me then.  What is is I’m missing?  They have no people working there or servicing the center?

Tom McColl introduced our comprehensive land use laws in the 1970s, and I am forever thankful that he did. The alternative was loosely controlled urban sprawl and loss of open spaces in the beautiful Willamette Valley and other areas of beauty. We have the most beautiful state in the union, IMO, and out land use laws are largely responsible.
Some see it as a private property issue, others see ourselves as stewards of the land; we are, after all, just passing through. Sorry that jobs are lost, but protecting the land is more important in the long run.

One could simply Google “Oregon Senate Bill 1592″ to find out the particulars. Obviously this hadn’t occurred to some.

    • Ramalama

Rupert, sure, one could Google it. But it’s bad writing to force the reader to look up what should be in the piece itself.

To simply say “things are this way, but you have to look up for yourself what this really is about” is not only bad writing, it’s rude.

      • Rupert in Springfield

The article does give a brief overview, but you are right, a better written article would have more specifics.

        • Ramalama

No, Rupert, it doesn’t give an overview of the bill, it repeats a bunch of boilerplate talking points without saying what the bill does.

This is a garbage post, written, apparently, for an audience that seems to enjoy reading garbage.
