The Port Townsend Paper Company’s Cogen project in Washington is a model of how biomass can provide green, renewable energy while also creating jobs

Port Townsend Paper’s Cogen project will upgrade and enhance their existing boiler system to more efficiently and cleanly burn wood biomass. The upgrade and enhancements will:
- Reduce the burning of 1.8 million gallons of fuel oil every year (a 25% reduction)
- Reduce emissions over today’s levels – the project will reduce existing particulate emissions by about 70%
- Provide future emissions even cleaner than all State and Federal emissions limits
- Use limbs and tops (slash) from existing commercial tree harvesting as wood biomass – materials historically that have been dumped in piles or burned in the forest
- Create 30 new full-time, permanent jobs
- Create an additional 35 full-time construction jobs for one year
- Sustain and strengthen 300 existing jobs and the support benefits for over 400 dependants and retirees
