  • Fortune Teller

My prediction is that it will be a reverse of last time. Obama will be more aggressive & Romney will play it more safe.

  • The Professor

Both feel they have the entire race at stake in just 90 minutes. Both will have to be aggressive as each tries to deliver the knockout blow.

  • Tim Lyman

Blogging live … let’s hope the batteries last…

  • Tim Lyman

So – will it be Obama the empty suit, or Obama the empty chair tonight?

  • Tim Lyman

    And we’re off …

  • Tim Lyman

82 uncommitted voters – how can anyone still be undecided? I promised Jason I would not make any undecided voter jokes…

  • Undecided defender

Some people tune politicians out. It’s all negative nowadays. You can’t blame them.

  • Tim Lyman

20 yr old college student says everyone says he won’t be able to get a job when he graduates … Mitt tells story of some student … will grow pell grants … ” I know what it takes to get this economy growing” “more and more (student) debt with fewer jobs.

  • Tim Lyman

Obama – doesn’t thank moderator or audience like Romney. Says he will add more jobs to the five million he created. Brags about auto bailout. Says Community Colleges will offer more worker retraining. Pitches green energy (dumb move – solyndra, etc). “let’s take the money we’ve been spending on war and invest it…”

  • Aaron

Neither answer actually addressed how to get a job.

  • Tim Lyman

Crowley asks Romney about long term unemployed. “president’s policies … haven’t put people back to work.” Mentions 10.7% UI rate that counts people who’ve dropped out of the workforce. Owns bankruptcy, points out that President DID, in fact, “take detroit bankrupt.” BURN

  • Tim Lyman

Obama answers – here comes the stuttering.

  • Tim Lyman

Obama pitches class warfare – again. accuses Romney of shipping jobs overseas.

  • Aaron

Not liking either performance so far.

  • Tim Lyman

Q – Secretary Chu says “it’snot our policy to lower gas prices, do you agree?” Obama pitches green energy again, pitches higher mileage cars. “lowest oil imports ijn 16 years” wants to build on that – well, the worse the economy, the less gas people buy, so he’s on target. Accuses Romney of not having “the clean energy part.”

  • Tim Lyman

R – “let’s look at the presient’s policies, as opposed to the rhetoric.” Oil and gas production on federal lands down. Increase comes from Bakken fields, administration brought criminal charges against oil co. for 25 dead birds. “this has not been Mr. oil, or Mr. gas, or Mr. coal.” President promised ot bankrupt anyone who tried to build a coal plant. Promises N American energy independence within eight years. More drilling, more permits, pipeline from Canada.

  • Aaron

“You’ll just go bankrupt” is a GREAT use of a quote

  • Tim Lyman

Candy, re: gas prices – “are we looking at the new normal.”

O – very little of what R said was true. Says administration is issuing permits to work on public land. Oil imports are now apparently the lowest in 20 years.

  • The Critic

Great responses to a dumb question.

  • Aaron

    Ohhh DEAR GOD

  • Tim Lyman

R – But that’s not what you’ve done in the last four years. BURN. Letting Obama hanging himself on permits. The right course for America is “all of the above” Obama tries to interrupt, “you’ll get your chance in a moment.” we’ll see if Crowley shuts O down like she did R.

  • Tim Lyman

O – tries to tie R to Bush. Audience member here says “you are a joke.” I remind her that jokes are funny.

  • Tim Lyman

Candy tries to cut Romney off after giving O extra time.

  • Aaron

This just makes both of them look like petulant children.

  • The Professor

The best energy debate in 10 years!!!!
They should do a whole segment on it.
    America need it.

  • The Professor

Candy is being fair. They can’t talk forever, its already 25 minutes in, only three questions

    • Tim Lyman

Yeah, she needs to slap them both down when they try to take an extra turn.

  • Tim Lyman

Obvious plant asks questions about mortgage deductions, charitable deductions, education deductions “which are important to the middle class.” The woman should be green she’s such an obvious plant. D or R, I don’t know, but definitely a plant.

  • Aaron

This is better, stick to the arguments, not arguing. Romney shines here.

  • Tim Lyman

Romney talks lower taxes on middle class and job creation. Agreed, he’s doing well here.

  • Tim Lyman

O – claims middle class tax cuts. News to me, My taxes only down because income down. If income same, taxes would be higher. O accuses congress of holding bills hostage. Talks about Bill Clinton. “Cutting taxes for the rich …” “someone like you, making $22 million a year” more class envy BS.

  • Tim Lyman

R – top 5% will continue to pay 60% as they do today. Will lower deductions and exemptions on top earners. Taxes are about jobs. Lower rates = more small business hiring. Runs stats. Pitches 5 point plan. Sounds good. Talking about what he’ll do as opposed to responding to O.

  • No Jo

Since when did Obama cut taxes?

  • Tim Lyman

Candy shilling for O re: taxes. O a little nasty in initial response. Pitches standard talking points re: no military cuts and tax cuts for the rich, Romney plan lacks specifics, mentions R paying 14% again. More class warfare. Starting to sound like a broken record. Brings up Big Bird. I swore I’d never use the term, but OMG, hasn’t he figured out that Big Bird tactic is a loser?

  • Tim Lyman

O losing people in the weeds. I think a lot of eyes are glazing over.

  • Tim Lyman

Crowley taking control, but implying Romney plan doesn;t add up. R – ” I ran business for 25 years and balanced the budget, I ran the Olympics and balanced the budget, I was governor an dbalanced the budget” Slams O on debt & deficit. If president reelected we will go to 20 trillion debt, on the road to Greece.

  • The Professor

Now it is Romney who is interrupting.
    You can’t deny that.

  • WB

of course the numbers add up…

  • Tim Lyman

Dimwitted young lady – “Do you plan to remedy inequities in the workplace.” quotes false statistic on womens’ earnings. O tells lie about his spoiled mother’s struggle.

  • Aaron

see here would be a Romney aha response…. see after 4 years in Washington
the Pres still doesn’t know how legislation works, we aren’t hitting hard specifications because we need room to compromise and negotiate…unlike your
budgets that were so NOT bi-partisan that they aren’t even partisan and you couldn’t even get a single
    Democratic Senator to sign on.

  • Tim Lyman

Audience member responds that women are increasingly becoming breadwinners, but lately are getting tired of standing in breadlines because their husbands have been laid off.

  • Aaron

Am I wrong that O’s mother was all over the world and wouldn’t have built up time in the job or organization? Am I missing that story being about his Grandma instead?

    • Tim Lyman

So may lies about family, hard to tell, Grandparents were RICH, Gdad in banking, so no one suffered.

  • Felix

Pay equity tough issue. Seems like they only want oen answer

  • Aaron

Because that’s not Washington deciding health care? Completely ignoring the religious implications…..amazing

  • No Jo

    Contraception.
    So private
    yet it is so public

  • Aaron

    this is just painful

  • The Professor

Bush has entered the room with that question. Heh heh

  • Tim Lyman

Another plant, again, hard to tell whether D or R plant. O interrupts, looks petulant, R fumbling, should have just answered lady’s question.

Bush and I are different people, and these are different times. We can now get all the energy we need in NA, will crack dopwn on China, Bush didn’t, I will balance budget, Bush didn’t. Slams O on calling out Bush for deficits. Says party too focused on big business, will now focus on small business. regulators must encourage small enterprise, not crush it.

  • Tim Lyman

O returns to class envy & 5.2 million new jobs. Beats outsourcing drum, blames deficits & debt on tax cuts.

  • Tim Lyman

Unless something changes in the next 40 minutes, I think perception of who won will depend on party affiliation. O keeps repeating talking points, R varies somewhat.

  • Tim Lyman

Q – I voted fo ryou in 2008, what have you done to earn my vote in 2012?

O – takes credit for ending Iraq war, spikes Osama ball. Takes credit for Dodd Frank – a bill to solve a problem created by the same idiots who made the problem.

  • Tim Lyman

O claims to have kept commitments he made. In what universe did this happen? More class warfare.

  • Aaron

I’m seeing no AHA moments, no major slips and the whole thing looking ugly in demeanor and interruptions. How that’s viewed by Independents and Undecideds I’m not sure….but it feels like a wash in performance.

  • Tim Lyman

R- “I think you know better.” BURN. If you elect President Obama you know what you’ll get, the next four years will be like the last four years.”

  • Tim Lyman

Romney sounds more like he’s talking to people, O sounds more like he’s lecturing, or speechmaking.

  • Tim Lyman

Phone battery dying. Will log off until end of debate.

  • Aaron

Romney is sounding better here when they aren’t cross talking.

  • Tim Lyman

    Aha! – restaurant has wireless!

  • Aaron

Ahhh, the illegal immigrant question plant… hrmmm might be the best response Ive heard Romney give on the issue, even if I’m Anti-DREAM

  • Tim Lyman

    Immigration question.

R pitches green cards to the skilled, maybe not so good with high unemloyment. Will not grant amnesty to illegals, will sanction employers. Will not put in place magnets. Kids of illegals shouild have pathway to becoming permenent resident.

Burns O on failed promise to pass immigration bill when he had a supermajority.

  • Felix

    Tired of immigration.
    What answer could please everyone.
    There is none.

  • Tim Lyman

O treading water on immigration issues. Generalities, no specifics. Claims illegal immigration lowest in 40 yrs – yeah, no jobs for them here.

  • Tim Lyman

Illegals have pledged allegiance to the flag? Oh, he means the Mexican flag.

  • Tim Lyman

Canard that people are getting pulled over and having “papers” checked because cops think they’re illegals.

  • Tim Lyman

    Crowley not calling time. Finally.

  • Tim Lyman

R – pitches e-verify. Busts O again for broken promise on immigration legislation during first year.

  • Tim Lyman

R – “I’m not going to round up 12 million people.”

  • Tim Lyman

O – rudely interrupts. Bad move.

  • Tim Lyman

R busts O on contents of his pension.

  • Aaron

Let me give you some advice, look at your pension.

  • newsboys

Self-deportation that will appear as a new buzzword,
    maybe even on SNL

  • The Professor

I am witnessing the battle of the pensions

  • Tim Lyman

Ds will accuse R of being rude to Pres by calling him out. I can hear it now “no respect for the office.”

  • Tim Lyman

    Finally the Libya question.

  • Aaron

Ohhh wow, Benghazi and a hard-core question.

  • Tim Lyman

Will O throw Hillary under the bus?

  • Tim Lyman

O sputtering. Investigate what happened Why not just look at the video that was taken live?

  • Tim Lyman

O accuses R of trying to make political points off Begazi. Here comes Bin laden.

  • Tim Lyman

O still refusing to say exactly what happened, even though we know.

  • Aaron

You don’t turn national security events into a political issue….and you DONT jeopardize national security to further political ideals at the expense of safety.

  • Tim Lyman

R – the buck does stop at Os desk. BURN. “It was a terrorist attack.” “Why didn’t we know.” (we did!) BURNS O on fundraiser. BURN, BURN, BURN!

  • Aaron

Wow R is really calling O to the carpet on Benghazi

  • Tim Lyman

R is crushing O on mideast.

  • The Professor

Not sure the Las Vegas quip works for Romney.

  • Tim Lyman

    R – “apology tour” BURN.

  • Tim Lyman

Candy asks O about H taking responsibility. Gives him chance to backtrack after pissing off millions of women voters for throwing Hillary under the bus.

  • Tim Lyman

O brings up caskets, bad form.

  • Aaron

It is OFFENSIVE and it is what YOU DID

  • ROMNEY 2012

Anyone would know that Romney is owning Obama has no chance. ROMNEY 2012

  • Tim Lyman

Candy jumps to Os defense. Bad form.

  • Damon

Romney needs in lesson in truth

    • Damon

Romney needs a lesson in truth telling……sorry people…..my cell phone has a mind of its own sometimes

  • Tim Lyman

Gun control question. Guess what? No one cares.

  • Aaron

    Fast and Furious…GO THERE

  • ROMNEY 2012

If Obama get reelected get ready for the 2nd great depression

  • Tim Lyman

Will we hear about fast and furious? Mile wide opening for R.

  • Aaron

The ATF and Justice allowed guns that would otherwise have been flagged and not sold under CURRENT law, to go into the hands of criminals and we know that they caused deaths.

  • Tim Lyman

Fast and Furious coming in 5…4…3…2…1…

  • Tim Lyman

    Go there!

  • ROMNEY 2012

Obama gave a ton of Mexicans guns to track them which failed. The mexicans just used the guns to kill U.S. border guards

  • Tim Lyman

O must be sweating bullets waiting for F&F

  • Tim Lyman

    Bam!

  • Aaron

    Here it is

  • The Professor

Gun control, will this debate end on gun control?

  • ROMNEY 2012

well…..I know one thing Romney won this debate for sure

  • Tim Lyman

Crowley covers for O by redirecting question back to assault weapons ban.

  • Felix

Obama scored on gun violence with kid story.
But turning it to two parent family and schools quite interesting.

  • ari

obama just made no sense. she met the mother by the bed side of her son ONE MONTH AGO and TWO MONTHS LATER the kid showed up!
    did obama see the future???

  • ROMNEY 2012

    ROMNEY/RYAN 2012!

  • Tim Lyman

R takes China question head on. “Trickle down government has never worked.”

  • SteveO

Obama was asked who was responsible for lack of security in libia when they …asked… for extra security. HE never answered the man’s question…classic avoidance. He only said here’s what we are doing/will do…

  • Tim Lyman

R busts on China for currency manipulation & O for not labeling China a currency manipulator.

  • Aaron

What do others think? Did Mitt win the Benghazi exchange? I’d say yes. I think Mitt missed a huge opportunity on how delivered Fast and Furious….no where near as effective as he could have made that.

    • Tim Lyman

I think he felt like he needed to back off a bit after the last exchange.

  • Tim Lyman

I almost forgot about Obamacare. Surprised no question about it yet.

  • SteveO

It’s clear the “President” gets the nod on stepping on the rules of the debate and Romney doesn’t

  • The Professor

    China is the new villain.
Very unfair to us and them.

  • Tim Lyman

Chinese currency went up because we’ve been printing money like mad.

  • SteveO

Only that Romney should have pointed how… Obama never answered your question did he Buddy?

  • Tim Lyman

O – there’s some jobs that are never coming back.” “I want high wage high skill jobs.” Tell that to the fifty year old guy who lost his blue collar job. Think he’s going to go out and get an engineering degree.?

  • Tim Lyman

This is the last question, which means there was no Obamacare question?????

  • Tim Lyman

Good question for last question. Good opportunity for Romney, will do nothing for Obama.

  • Tim Lyman

Romney is not running away from his Mormonism (is that a word?). Good.

  • Tim Lyman

R closes with bad economy talking point stats.

  • Tim Lyman

R going off question. Crowley rightly, politely shuts him down.

  • Tim Lyman

Obama lying through his teeth about believing in private enterprise.

    • valley person

Then why is Wall Street and my 401K up so much since Obama was elected?

      • Dean Apostol Lies

        You don’t have a 401k.

  • Tim Lyman

O closes with the 47%. More class envy. Weak.

  • Aaron

Bad bad whole thing here at the end…this is what people have misunderstood about O?

  • Tim Lyman

O talking about R, not about himself, as asked.

  • Tim Lyman

    Draw.

  • SteveO

question: asked to talk about themselves… Obama spends half his time bashing Romney on the 47% comment

  • The professor

the 47%. it will not go away.

  • Aaron

Really ugly debate, cross talk annoyingly interfering

  • Aaron

Crowley was bad bad bad as a moderator, she lost control so early that it was just ugly the whole night

  • SteveO

probably draw but the nod goes to the sitting pres of course and thats what the media will say.. O O O O…

  • Tim Lyman

I just watched the Frank Lutz focus group on FOX. Very interesting.

The group felt the debate was a draw, and that O came off as presidential, but a huge majority of the undecideds who voted for O in 2008, decided to vote for Romney, based on this debate.

My theory: The Obama campaign did what Democrats do best – scare voters by demonizing the opponent. Voters are now seeing Romney and realizing he doesn’t eat babies for breakfast; that he is an articulate guy who looks presidential. The fear manufactured by the Obama campaign is dissipating, and, absent fear of Romney, voters have no reason to support the failure that is President Obama.

Prediction: Romney win, not a landslide, but not close.

    • valley person

I’ll take a piece of that action if you would like to lay a bet down on your prediction.
