Salem, OR–Rep. Jim Thompson (R-Dallas) has been selected to receive the 2012 Advocate-of-the Year Award for his work on legislative policy involving Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII).

Thompson was notified of his accolade in a letter dated March 21 from Robert Hayes, chairman of the Albany-based Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force.

“One of the biggest issues I undertook was to connect the health issues of addiction and mental health to the judicial process,” Rep. Thompson said. “We now have a system that will recognize that addressing the health issues and treatment of the impaired driver is equally important as driving sanctions.”

The award will be presented to Thompson at the DUII Multi-Disciplinary Impaired Driving Training Conference, which is scheduled to take place at the Riverhouse Hotel in Bend April 26-27.

“I also want to thank the Judiciary and Health committee members who received the work of the DUII task force and effectuated those recommended policies into our statutes,” Rep. Thompson said.
