Lars Larson: Health Care “Clunkers”

You don’t need a better example of why the United States government should not run health care then the Cash for Clunkers program.

Cash for Clunker, a billion dollars, and it all went out the door in about four days. So fast that the government couldn’t even keep up or estimate how long it would last. They estimated November. Are you kidding me?

A lot of us saw the same kind of message in that””don’t let the United States government anywhere near health care. If they can’t even manage a give-away of borrowed tax dollars, how in the world are they going to manage something as complicated as health care.

It doesn’t make any sense to have the U.S. government take over our health care. And, take over they will. If Barack Obama and the Democrats have their way, they will offer up a program that will seduce American employers into dumping you into Obamacare and out of private care.

That’s not good for anybody.

But see article below. Cash for clunkers is a great government success story and they have re-funded it so it will last at least another week.

    Let’s see:

    1) CfC proves that government programs are very popular, especially where the middle class is the beneficiary. (Otherwise, they say they hate government and hate taxes.)
    2) CfC proves that, when a govt program doesn’t go as planned (and *all* plans don’t go as planned, govt or corporate or anywhere else), they quickly took steps to augment it.
    3) However, as I wrote on my blog, this isn’t a great way to spend money to reduce carbon emissions. My calculations indicate it is costing about $3000 per metric ton of CO2. That’s huge.

Would someone please inform writers that there is a difference between “then” and “than?” It is most tiresome to see paid employees without the least grasp of the English language. The word “than” is a term the is comparative in nature e.g. “I would rather go here “THAN” there. The word “then” is a term for time e.g. “This is now and that was “THEN”. Other than that I liked the article. hj

CfC is definitely a success story. Sorry, Lars…I still disagree with you. It resonates with the ‘success’ that could have been had with more tax cuts. This ‘diversion’ of a stimulus program is definitely a boondoggle of bureaucracy. No doubt.
I believe conservatives lost a huge opportunity to seize the initiative and attack this so-called ‘stimulus’ in its infancy and seriously put the liberals on the defensive.

I’m not faulting you here, Lars, but this clutzy performance by the Republicans over what is obviously simply a public uprising against the libs and their latest attempt at snake oil sales is par for the course. It’s made worse even then the debate over the stimulus.

The lack of cohesion in responding to the drumbeat performance of this administration is pathetic. There is no opposition party, only the ‘opposition’. While I believe Americans are wising up and realizing just how conservative the majority of us all are, I’m skeptical it will make a real difference in ’10 without some unity…a voice.

So far, Peter Schiff has my vote. That’s a pathetic statement for the state of Republicans.

Moses: I expect a 1000-word essay on my misuse of the word ‘then’ and a comparitive study on the probablilty Lars simply had a ‘typo’…

I have my own proposal for a ‘clunker’ program. I’ll email it to you in the morning, Lars.

You and Tina be well, and keep up the fight! 🙂

Sure, the financial argument is a good one. However consider that these people are self described progressives.

A lot of time has passed and history has been forgotten, but Americans need to remember that progressives have horrifying ideas regarding health care.

That should scare the hell out of you.

Progressives and health care are a deadly combination. This is the mass forced sterilization crowd, the eugenics crowd. It has been so long we have forgotten.

    Sound a little strong?

Well, consider Rahm Emanuel’s brother, Ezekiel Emmanuel.

He is one of those bureaucrats that will be in charge, He is a leading health care advisor to Obama. He is the health policy advisor at the administrations Office of Management and Budget. That’s right, he is the guy advising the White House on how to cut costs in health care.

    Here is what Ezekiel thinks:

    “Conversely, services provided to individuals
who are irreversibly prevented from being
or becoming participating citizens are not basic and
should not be guaranteed. An obvious example is
not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia. A less obvious example Is is guaranteeing neuropsychological
services to ensure children with learning disabilities
can read and learn to reason.”

“they will offer up a program that will seduce American employers into dumping you into Obamacare and out of private care. ”

Since government (according to conservative gospel) screws up everything it touches and can’t do anything right, how is “Obamacare” going to out-compete private care? If the private sector offers a superior product at a competitive price, won’t consumers prefer it? Isn’t that “Economics 101,” as you right-wingers love to put it?

      >News flash, Rupe: The government ALREADY determines what services are covered by Medicaid.

Um, ok, I’m really glad for you.

Not exactly sure what that has to do with what I said but I’m glad you apparently got some joy out of posting a fact everyone is aware of.

News fact Darter – Yogurt often has fruit mixed with it when served.

      >Since government (according to conservative gospel) screws up everything it touches and can’t do anything right,

News flash darter – Conservatives never claim government screws up everything. Most conservatives think government does a reasonable job running that which it is constitutionally mandated to do. The military being an example.

      >how is “Obamacare” going to out-compete private care? If the private sector offers a superior product at a competitive price, won’t consumers prefer it? Isn’t that “Economics 101,” as you right-wingers love to put it?

News flash Darter – Because government can run things at a loss, private industry cannot. Thus government can run health care at a loss for years or decades until private insurance is driven out of business.

Seriously, did you even think about this last bit before posting it? I mean that one is real basic.
