Dr. Monica Wehby for U. S. Senate

Portland, Oregon — Monica Wehby, MD, announced her candidacy today for the United States Senate. A practicing pediatric neurosurgeon for 15 years, Dr. Wehby has held numerous leadership positions at the local, state, and national level. She serves on the Board of Directors at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, as a trustee for the American Medical Association, and is a past-president of the Oregon Medical Association. Dr. Wehby has also received the Congressional Medal of Distinction for improving children’s health.

From Dr. Monica Wehby:

“That pioneer spirit that our state was founded upon is under attack by a federal government that wants to control every aspect of our lives: our education, our healthcare system, and our businesses. When I talk to small business owners they are very concerned about all these new regulations, new laws, new taxes coming out of Washington D.C. They don’t know whether to invest and grow their business, or hold back and see what happens to this economy. They don’t feel like they have a senator who is looking out for them.”

“I will never stop being a doctor. Serving as your U.S. Senator will simply be an extension of the work that I have done my entire adult life—listening to the patient, looking at data, figuring out the problem, and fixing it. We can’t be afraid to face our problems. We can’t put our head in the sand and pretend they aren’t there. I decided I could either fret and complain as we go from bad to worse, or roll up my sleeves and get to work.”

“I understand that Washington D.C. is broken. We need a pragmatic, problem-solving approach to break through the partisan gridlock and get government working again—for the people. So I ask you to join with me to make Oregon and our country a better place to work, live, and raise a family.”

Supporters offered praise and encouragement:

“What drives Monica is helping people. Whether she is working as a state and national healthcare leader or as a doctor caring for very sick children—Monica puts people first. That’s the kind of leadership we need in the U.S. Senate,” commented Carla D. Harris, RN, retired CAO, Children’s Hospital.

“As a surgeon, Monica is beloved by her patients and their families—and deservedly so. The care, concern, commitment, focus, and extraordinary skill she brings to her medical practice would be tremendous assets to the citizens of Oregon and the nation as we attempt to chart a more hopeful, compassionate future,” said Tom Soma, executive director of a Portland non-profit organization.

“Monica is bright, real, and is a team player. We need someone to represent all Oregonians,” stated Craig Kiest, an Oregon small business owner.

Dr. Wehby is a registered Republican. She currently is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She also serves as a trustee for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (the Oregon and Southwest Washington Region) and has served as a trustee on multiple boards, including the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Services and the Legacy Health Systems Foundation. She resides in Portland with her four children.
