Portland liberal talk radio listeners lie, Here is the proof

By Gregg Clapper,
Unindicted Big Game Hunter and Political Advisor

A new system of determining radio station ratings is now in place and it has been devastating to liberal talk radio. First, understand that radio ratings are based on a combination of how many listeners a station has and how long they listen. The old system of determining ratings was based on a diary system. A statistical sample of radio listeners was given a diary and asked to write down what stations they listened to and for how long. The new system is electronic. Listeners now receive an electronic gadget that a listener carries. The gadget receives a sub carrier signal broadcast by all radio stations and registers exactly what station is listened to and for how long. No longer can a loyal, enthused listener claim they listen to their favorite radio station 25 hours a day and thus corrupt the ratings. This new system began in Portland this past October. Arbitron ratings are based on 4 three month intervals (winter, spring, summer, and fall ratings periods).
The most recent ratings (October-November-December)from the fall ratings book have recently been released. It’s the first time the electronic devices did the measuring. Because of seasonal differences in listening habits, most radio time buyers, like myself, compare apples to apples. If I want to know how a radio station’s audience numbers are fluctuating, I’ll compare the fall 2008 ratings to the fall 2009 ratings.

What happened to KPOJ? These numbers represent the overall 12 years of age and older total audience share combining how many listeners with how long they listen. It’s called the average quarter hour share (AQH).

Fall 2008 = 3.5
Fall 2009 = 0.9

This means that under the old diary system where a listener wrote down what they claimed to listen to and how long, KPOJ was thought to have 3.5% of the audience listening to them. But when the electronic gadget registered what was actually listened to and for how long, KPOJ’s rating plummeted.
KPOJ’s programming essentially stayed the same during the past year. The only thing that was different was the reporting system. It very clearly shows that KPOJ listeners were wildly overstating the amount of hours they listened. They were lying.

As a point of reference, you may think a 3% share of the audience is very small. It’s not. Portland is the 23rd largest radio market in the United States. There are many radio stations in Portland. Historically, a station could be top rated with as little as 6% of the audience.

What about the conservative talk stations listeners? Don’t they lie too? The numbers say no.

It’s interesting to note that 2 of the 3 conservative talk stations actually increased their ratings under the new system. Apparently, conservative news talk listeners didn’t lie under the old system of writing down what stations they listened to and for how long.

By the way, in reference to the above picture of me and the Alaskan brown bear”¦ I believed him to be a liberal.

OK, but I want to hear more about your hunt for the bear. That’s a nice trophy!

  • Sagano

If only we could apply these new radio monitors to votes in the election. Instead of a huge ratings drop we would witness a huge drop in false ballots. How can Oregon get one?

    • Richard

Excellent observation Sagano. No one I talk with ever believes the election results as they are reported by the state. In Oregon the corruption is at the begining of the ballot not at the end like other parts of the country. All the stuffing is done before they are mailed.

  • Diamond Jim

What about voter ID – drop the mail thing – go back to the polls. It would give people jobs and reduce at least some of the fraud in Oregon’s elections “process”.
Whoa – we wouldn’t want that, now would we? What would dems do without the dead voting for them?

  • Dave A.

Of course the good news is that Airhead America is now bankrupt and gone. Even Gerge Soros wasn’t willing to bail those jerks out!

    • Reper

Then Obama shoudl use TARP to bail them out. Jobs, jobs, jobs. Obama could say with a straight face he did in fact save jobs.

  • Anonymous

KPAM (jerks) would have better ratings if they hadn’t overreacted to the phony allegations and not fired the “Clappmeister”.
Idea: KPAM should run Mark Levin straight through from 3-6 and move the tiresome Taft back to 6:07-6:15.

      DON’T DIS VICTORIA!!!!

Although I agree that many stations could use more Levin. We need some more 24/7 conservative talk stations. And they need some consistent programming. It seems like stations are always messing around shifting hours or experimenting with alternative programming. I just want one station that meets the following criteria:

Can be heard clearly in Salem
      Has Rush live 9-12 M-F
Has Beck, Hannity, Ingrahm, Thompson and Savage, all 3 hours, everyday, at the best times possible (I know they can’t all be live, but get the order as best as possible then STICK WITH IT)
Uses local conservatives as filler, but always puts the national shows first
      NEVER preempts for sports

Can we do this? Can we just get ONE station to do this and see where the ratings go?

      • Anonymous

Regarding “local conservatives as filler,” I’d be happy with Lars running live each day, so Oregonians had a chance to call in and talk live on local issues. This would, of course, mean he would need to shift his show to 12-3, so as not to interfere with Rush. Because Rush wins. Rush always wins.

        Sorry, Lars.

How about someone carrying Bill Bennett LIVE 3am-6am. He’s the most well rounded, intelligent, and talented Conservative of ‘em all. Great guests & he loves Rock & Roll.

      • The Bill Post Radio show

In reply to you anon 5.1:
KYKN currently runs the following lineup and of course you don’t HAVE to tune in to a Portland station to get it clearly in Salem!
Laura Ingraham 6-9am (with local breaks for news sports weather psa etc)
        Rush Limbaugh 9-12
Bill Post 12-1 (not your USUAL local talk show)
        Dave Ramsey 1-3
        Glenn Beck 3-6
        Hugh Hewitt 6-9
        Dennis Prager 9-12
Great lineup and LOCAL, meaning YOUR local businesses!

        • Anonymous

Not bad – but who is Dave Ramsey? Also, no offense to either you or Dave, but I would REALLY like Hannity in the 12-3 after Rush (not sure if that would be “live” or not, but I was really used to that lineup on the radio in other cities where I have lived).

          • The Bill Post Radio Show

Dave Ramsey is the biggest “Money” talker in America.
He folks, especially younger folks, with management of their money. We have found him to be a great break from the non-stop politics in the middle of the day AND he brings us the much coveted 18-49 year old female listeners.
As for the 12-3, well, I personally think I am MUCH better than Hannity but I am a bit biased. ANYONE can pound on the desk for three hours but can you be funny, satirical and meaningful at the same time? In our latest online poll on our website, my show beat hannity 4-1 from July-August of last summer. What can I say?

          • Anonymous

I don’t want a money talker – Ramsey, Clark Howard, Motley Fool… all these shows are self-help drivel no different from Dr Laura. Fine for a self-help radio station, but I want NEWS.

  • Britt Storkson

Liberals lie about everything else so why should this be any different?

  • The Bill Post Radio show

Hey one more bit of info on ratings Greg.
1430 KYKN in Salem, for the first time in it’s history, showed up in the Portland Arbitrons, due to the new ratings service, PPM. We are a Salem station but unfortunately are considered by Arbitron to be a Portland station. We pulled a .8 which is HUGE for a station that doesn’t even come in in Portland and as you have pointed out, the new system is based on ACTUAL listening, not diary keeping.
We are thrilled that Conservative Talk Radio and especially our local talk showing huge improvements with the new system.
If you are interested in LOCAL programming, not just Portland Radio, tune to 1430 AM, KYKN or online at 1430kykn.com for streaming.
    thank you

You raise another good point, which is that I am SICK AND TIRED of Salem being treated as a suburb of Portland for radio and tv purposes – especially tv.

What do we have to do to get our own REAL local news? Hell, if Coos Bay can have its own local news, why can’t we? I don’t care about all the Portland issues, but it’s all I can get on tv. Meanwhile, all sorts of things happen here in the second largest city in the state – and the Capital! – that never make the “local” news.

    • bad reception

I’d love KYKN better if I could hear it better.

I drive from Salem to Beaverton daily and reception goes out variably from before Woodburn to hearing it well in Beaverton. (the radio is working properly, I checked).

Any way to boost the signal or make it more reliable.

      • The Bill Post Radio Show

I am sorry, wish I could do something but ALL radio stations have a wattage and coverage assigned to them by the FCC WAY back. We are a Salem station but with a bit of a signal into Portland.
I think that we have as good a lineup of any Portland station and you can always listen on line at http://www.1430kykn.com
As for the comments on Dave Ramsey et al: these guys bring in revenue to the station and listeners that don’t like politics and so a new batch of listeners to try to turn to politics.
Thats the job of a radio station. Make money, get more listeners. I have found that most folks that don’t like Ramsey are over 55.

  • cecil

You were doing OK until I saw you posed with the bear you killed. What is there to be proud of by shooting a bear? Does that mean you are a real man? What it means to me is that you had fun killing a bear, which makes absolutely no sense at all. Any fool with a gun can shoot any animal. So what? I suppose you go on those canned hunts too? Get all psyched up to shoot an elephant in a corral? I bet you aim for cats on the road and butcher your own chickens by wringing their necks and pulling their heads off. Yep, a real hombre there.

    • D.A. Brown

Sounds like Cecvil here is a PETA dummy as well as an anti-gun clown. Are you also a gay boi Cecil?

  • Jack

Now can Free America have AM 620 back?

  • Anonymous

do you have any evidence of this or just worthless allegations?

    *Bob T:*

Nah. Mark Levin should be taken off altogether for he’s too immature. He polarizes things and has nearly zero talent for explaining why Dems and similar believers are wrong. He should tak his silly name-calling elsewhere. We’d be better off with intelligent people like Larry Elder, or Tammy Bruce instead.

By the way, if you want intelligent limited government advocacy at 3 pm, try Jason Lewis on 970 AM. Levin doesn’t even have a clue on how to even start discussing the same things.

You gotta be kidding me? Do you look at ratings for talk radio Bob?
Levin is the hottest behind only Glenn Beck.
Tammy Bruce is a self avowed “Lesbian Conservative” who is “pro choice”. How is that Conservative values?
NO ONE carries her for that reason, on top of the fact that she is really horrible radio.

  • Bob Tiernan

    *Bill Post Radio Show:*

You gotta be kidding me? Do you look at ratings for talk radio Bob?

    *Bob T:*

Ratings tell me very little about how good these talk host are.

Just like the box office tells me very little about which films are actually the best
of the year. In 1979 or so, “The Duelists” made very little compared to dozens of
other insignificant films. But none of them campared to that film.

    *Bill Post Radio Show:*

Levin is the hottest behind only Glenn Beck.

    *Bob T:*

So? I’ve listened to him enough to know that he can’t really define
the free market very well and why it’s the way we should go and remain.
Like Hannity fails at that as well. Levin will say something like gee, we
have a right to the free market because socialism is bad, and then
he’ll refer to Hillary as Her Thighness (again), and then I turn the dial.

Beck is okay. I liked a lot of his funny stuff five years ago. But he
sounds like he’s too into conspiracy theories right now. I’m interested
in someone puncturing the left’s grip on the racism issue and so on.
Beck does nothing regarding that, so when/if the Dems start losing
their grip on 90-plus percent of the black vote and 75% or more of
the Hispanic vote, it won’t be because of anything Beck points out.

    *Bill Post Radio Show:*

Tammy Bruce is a self avowed “Lesbian Conservative” who is “pro choice”.
    How is that Conservative values?

    *Bob T:*

First of all, pro-life isn’t necessarily “conservative” — it’s just important to religious
conservatives who came along years after the conservatives had been around
and then tried to re-define the movement to include that as a litmus test.
I don’t buy it. There are plenty of atheists or other pro-choice people who
are far better conservatives that most to all so-called pro-life people because
almost all of the latter turn out to be big government spenders and economic
lightweights who, when in office, get us into an even bigger hole than before.
Take a look around regarding the past year and a half. Do you like the
anemic economy, and the fact that for months and months it was hard to
tell if it was going to take a serious downturn or not? How do you like
it? Is a depression okay with you so long as abortion is banned during
    such a period? Big deal.

As for Tammy Bruce, the fact that she’s a lesbian does nothing to you
or anyone else. If you’ve listened to her in the past, you should know
that she explains and defends the free market better than just about
any Republican, and better than just about every conservative talk
host out there. Big defender of gun rights, and big Clinton and Obama
critic, defender of the fight against militant Islam, and real brilliant PC-hater
who puts Levin, Beck, Hannity and almost all others to shame regarding
all of the above topics. A bad economy affects just about everyone, and
leads to more of the wrong solutions. But I could care less about whether
or not there’s a Ten Commandments plaque in the courthouse, or
prayer in school. You can pray any time you want to, and read your
Bible in peace. No one’s taking it away. But you’d rather see junk
economic policies so long as those giving us those junk policies are
“true” to their pro-life beliefs. Whoop-dee-doo.

You’re also missing the fact that what she is, and her background, make her
far more likely to persuade people to her point of view, rather than the
way Levin tries by name calling and insults. That may be funny for you
to hear, but in the end there are no additional votes picked up for your
candidates. That’s what polarizing idiots like Levin do. And that’s why
    I don’t listen to them.

    *Bill Post Radio Show:*

NO ONE carries her for that reason, on top of the fact that
    she is really horrible radio.

    *Bob T:*

All that tells me is that you’re a really horrible audience.
