Senator Sphincter

Arlen Specter’s stated reason for switching sides, and the Democrat talking point of the day, is that the Republican Party has moved too far to the right.

The truth is much simpler. Arlen Specter is an old man clinging to the power he has become addicted to.

Specter said it himself. If he stays a Republican he will not win the Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania. As a Democrat the party will see that he runs unopposed by any viable Democrat candidate.

He also whined that if the Republicans had kept the Senate in 2006 he would be chair of the Judiciary Committee. In his fantasy world Lincoln Chafee would have won in Rhode Island and Jim Jeffords would still be a Republican if it wasn’t for right wing Republicans, and Republicans would have held the Senate in 2008.

If you watched the press conference you saw Specter spend more time bitching about his recent and pending loss of power than about policy. There couldn’t be any clearer evidence that this political move has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with Arlen Specter’s arrogance and pathetic need to remain in power.

There’s an old saw that politicians and diapers need to be changed often and for the same reason (they get full of ****). Arlen Specter is a prime example. He truly earned his nickname today.
