    Its a little ridiculous.

    Is texting while driving a really bad idea? Of course.

    However this is immediately obvious to most people. Just like to most people taking a call in the car will require more attention of you so compensate during the call, and keep the call short.

    It’s also immediately obvious to most people that drugs won’t kill you, won’t make you demented and won’t destroy your family.

    Yet that’s exactly what this sort of thing reminds me of. The overwrought anti drug ads of the eighties and nineties. It was as if the advertisers had a more disturbing habit than the drug users themselves. The need to ratchet up the horror in order to be more “real”, more “edgy”. What started as Nancy Reagan doing some sort of weird dance with a bunch of rock stars “Just Sayin No At Ya” quickly turned into frying a couple of eggs. Eventually we had a kind of hot young mom in tight jeans and a little too snug white top taking that frying pan and destroying the kitchen in an attempt to show a parallel with destruction of the family. I don’t know about you but frankly I would have rather lived with the guy smoking pot rather than some insane, but very hot, woman who was apt to destroy the kitchen on a moments notice any time she heard the bong water bubbling.

    Texting while driving, and frankly texting in general, is a sign of increasing stupidity in our society. We are simply raising a less intelligent class of people. Horrific commercials won’t solve that. However they might point to something else in our society. The need to constantly ratchet up the intensity in the media.

    As for the effectiveness of the commercials, they do little but point out the obvious. We are attempting to solve the problem of lower order intelligence in the texting driver with a commercial. This might point to a intelligence drift of a little more broad band nature than just the texting auto enthusiast.

    Maybe this is what it’ll take to stop the senseless auto accidents, train wrecks and bus wrecks that are happening because of cell phones and texting while laws don’t seem to help.
    Our kids go to see horror movies to get scared…well maybe ads like this will bring it to REAL life..The target shouldn’t be just the kids because adults are just as bad and are supposed to be the role models. I have seen several adults texting and talking with their teen agers in the cars. What an example..

    You know the one drawback to this type of advertisement is that even though it truly has shock value, all of us especially as young people really don’t believe it could happen to us, just to the other guy.

    The biggest thing that will stop it is us, the adults. Hard to tell your kid, don’t text while you’re doing it yourself. So many parents aren’t parents any more. They’re buddies to their kids, built in drivers, anything but parents. Until we as adults grow up our children will continue to die in senseless accidents.

  • Ben just conducted a follow up study with 205 viewers of a Public Service Announcement (PSA) from the U.K. illustrating the dangers of texting and driving. Results showed that the overwhelming majority of viewers (85%) reported that in the last week, they had reduced the amount of text and mobile messages sent while driving as a result of the video.
