Oregon economic numbers look terrible

CENSUS HIRING GIVES TEMPORARY BOOST TO APRIL JOBS NUMBERS
Yet Oregon still has 28,900 Fewer Non-Farm Payroll Jobs Since April 2009
By Oregon House Republicans,

Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged”¦
“Oregon’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 10.6 percent in April, the same level as in March.”
(Oregon’s Employment Situation: April 2010, Oregon Employment Department, 5/18/2010)

“¦Thanks to New Government Hiring.
“In April, most of the major industries performed near their normal pattern. Only one major industry showed a seasonally adjusted job change of 1,000 or more: government (+2,800 jobs). Three major industries added close to 500 jobs each, while only one major industry posted a substantial job decline: manufacturing (-500 jobs).”

Census Workers Boost April Jobs Numbers, But Only Temporarily.
“Government added 1,700 jobs in April at a time of year when a loss of 1,100 is expected due to seasonality. The addition of 1,022 intermittent Census workers boosted both federal government and total government for April, adding to the 930 already working for Census in March.”

Oregonians Believe State’s Economy is Worse Than the Rest of the Nation.
“Significantly, almost half the respondents — 47 percent — think Oregon’s economy is worse than the rest of the nation. Thirty-two percent think it is the same, while 12 percent think it is better.”
(Oregonians: Economy Still Suffering, Portland Tribune, 5/5/2010)

More Oregonians Than Ever Receiving Food Stamps”¦
“More than 700,000 Oregonians received food stamps last month, which means nearly one in five people in the state are relying on government help to buy their meals.

“The numbers — the highest in the history of the program — are well above the national average and suggest that families are still struggling financially.”
(More Oregonians Than Ever Are Receiving Food Stamps, The Oregonian, Michelle Cole, 5/15/2010)

“¦With No Decrease in Sight.
“Oregon’s high unemployment rate and a push to make the program accessible to all who qualify are driving the record enrollment. Managers at the state Department of Human Services say they do not see any sign of a decrease.”
