The Oregonian 9-26-2010: Northwest Oregonians seeking to replace Rep. David Wu with a new voice have their most inviting choice in years in a sports-minded businessman. Rep. David Wu of Portland has represented Oregon’s 1st District for six terms, partly due to his own tenacity, partly due to an uneven series of Republican challengers. During this time, the Democrat’s own impact in the House of Representatives has also been uneven, raising issues about the district’s voice in Washington that his GOP opponents have failed to seize.
This year, Tualatin small-businessman Rob Cornilles is mounting the most serious challenge to Wu in memory. Northwest Oregon voters seeking a new, more-consistent presence in Congress should choose Cornilles, and let him work to build a firmer connection from Washington County to Washington, D.C. Cornilles, 46, a native of the district, has built a sports consulting firm, Game Face, working with professional franchises across the country. He brings business experience and an articulate determination unlikely to leave anyone confused about his positions or priorities. His strong pro-trade position better fits the trade-intensive district than Wu’s objections. Cornilles has no government experience at any level and will have to deepen his knowledge of many issues facing the district. But everything about Cornilles’ background suggests a strong capacity to learn and the ability to work across lines to make a clear impact in Washington.
