3% tax to give $750 rebates closer to Nov. ballot

Initiative petition 17 has turned in over 135,000 signatures early.  They need 117,000 to qualify after processing.  Initiative petition 17 puts a 3% tax on Oregon corporations’ sales  above $25 million.   It takes the money and doles out $750 checks to all Oregonians.

Most of the near million dollar funding it took to gather signatures for initiative petition 17 came from an out-of-state California firm that wishes to make Oregon an experiment in what is called guaranteed “universal income” where government hands out free monthly checks to citizens.

If passed, it would go into effect immediately begin January 2025.
