Candidate donation swap to manipulate grants

Here is another example of why government funding of political campaigns is a bad idea.   In Portland, there are nearly 100 candidates running for City Commissioner Office this fall.   Portland promises free City dollars in matching funds for candidates who raise a certain amount of small donations.  That is correct, Portland gives money, paid by taxpayers, directly to political candidates.

Willamette Week reports that some candidates are considering sharing small donors to meet the threshold to get free tax cash from the system.

There have been so many candidates going after the free money that the program budget exploded to $5 million dollars, which was more than what was available.   So the program was scaled back this year.   This means the City promised candidates money and now they cannot deliver because they are expected to be out of money.

There are politicians who wish to take this system statewide in Oregon.
