Oregon #4 food stamp state (homeless magnet)

Oregon was just rated the #4 biggest food stamp state in America as measured by percent of participants (we are #5 if you include Washington DC). Roughly 17% of Oregonians are on government food assistance — that is 1 of 6 people in the state.

By comparison, the lower Food Stamp dependent states; Utah, Wyoming, New Hampshire, North Dakota, are around 5% of the population. That means Oregon Food Stamp rate is triple other states.

In the past Oregon has offered Food Stamp benefits longer than other states.  This is why Oregon remains a top homeless state as well.

Also, Oregon works hard to give free food benefits away. This summer the Department of Human Services did a statewide public campaign seeking people to give $120 monthly grocery benefits for the summer. We wrote at the time:

The State of Oregon is desperately trying to give away free $120.00 to over 10,000 families as part of their Summer EBT program. The idea is that many students get free breakfast and lunch in their local public school, but when school is out, the government feels compelled to hand them food money for the summer — even if people are not asking for it. Could a High School student not work for the summer for one week to earn $120? Now, they don’t have to.Summer is nearly over, and now the Oregon Department of Human Services is on a race and media campaign to hand-out the free food money to people for whom they have no idea exist (in the way that they think they do). They are seeking to over 10,000 families to qualify.
