Eastern Oregon — After the passage of SB 5801 to address the funding deficit at the Oregon Department of Forestry, Representative Vikki Breese Iverson (R-Prineville), Representative Bobby Levy (R-Echo), and Representative Mark Owens (R-Crane) issued the following statement:

“We are thankful the brave men and women who fought for the safety of Oregonians across the state will now be paid.

Now our attention must turn to the root of the problem. Oregon’s forests are an incredible resource. Unlocking their full potential would allow us to rebuild rural economies, fund schools, build housing, address air quality, and remove the built-up fuel in our forests.

In the upcoming legislative session, we will renew our efforts for Oregon and western state leaders to speak with one voice to the federal government: If you continue to let federal lands burn, we would like a chance to manage them,”

Representatives Breese Iverson, B. Levy and Owens represent the majority of the 1.9 million acres burned during the 2024 fire season.
