An Oregon State Senator has been removed from several committees due to medical needs. The Wallement Week reported that Senator Arron Woods (D—Wilsonville) was removed by Senate President Rob Wagner (D—Lake Oswego). According to Senator Wagner’s office, this decision was made because Senator Woods will be away from Salem periodically for medical treatment. As a result, he has been removed from the Senate Labor and Business Committee, the Joint Committee on Ways and Means, and its Subcommittee on Transportation and Economic Development.  On the House side State Representative Hoa Nguyen (D-Portland) has been battling stage 4 cancer and has being absent from many votes.

With Senator Woods requiring medical treatment for the remainder of the session, Senate Democrats will have one less vote, bringing the composition to 17 Democratic Senators and 12 Republican Senators.  The Constitution requires 18 votes in the Senate (60%) and 36 in the House (60%) to pass taxes.   Over 10 taxes were introduced in the transportation package last week.

Lawmakers are in the building for less than 90 days away from their hard deadline.

Although we speculate about political realities, it is secondary to the health of our elected lawmakers.

Thoughts, prayers and hope extended to their recovery.
