Take a peeky-peeky at the sneaky-sneaky bills

April 9th was the Oregon Legislature’s deadline for bills to have a public hearing and work session in order to prove that they are alive and priority for the final few weeks of the Session which ends at the end of June.

At near the final hour of the deadline came a flood of empty “study” bills.   These bills are meant to be mostly empty so when the final days of the Legislature get closer, politicians will gut-and-stuff the bill with a massive tax, product ban or lavish pork-barrel slush-fund spending project.

The politicians do not wish to hold proper public hearings on very bad ideas and controversial ones.  So,the politicians just wait until the very end, when rules dictate shorter public notice for hearings and when no one is looking to speed these bad ideas through.

That is exactly what happens.  The Taxpayers Association of Oregon documented on how one Legislative Committee held over 30 bill votes in just a few hours.

You can see this play out with your own eyes with these stooge study bills that we featured above.

This turns our democracy in a shell game.
