$2B gas tax reworked, hobbles to House Floor (do call)

Here is the latest on the $2 billion gas tax/road tax bill HB 2025

– Last week the bill was voted out of committee after replacing unwilling committee members
– The bill headed to the House floor for a vote but faced troubles, so it was re-routed back to the committee
– On Thursday June 26th a ram-rod hearing was held and the bill was amended
– The amendments reduced the gas tax a bit, removed the car tax, and some other modifications to make it less harmful (barely)
– Now the bill heads to the floor
– Republican lawmakers are warning that they may not approve any fast-tracking of the bill.
– If the bill is not fast-tracked and must undergo the usual 24-hour waiting period for each chamber to process according to state law, the bill then may run past the Sunday midnight deadline this June 29th when Session must end.
– There is a chance that this bill may die when Session is forced to end.

We explain this drama and controversy behind this bill to show that this bill is severely wounded and in danger of dying. Even Democrat lawmakers have pledged to vote against it. Therefore, we urge everyone to call their State Representative to oppose this gas tax bill in the next 24 hours!

Here are changes made to the gas tax bill. Changes gas tax increase from 15 cents down to 12-cents. Lets the gas tax kick in fully instead of staggered. A 300% increase in wage tax to pay for transit. Lowers cost from $2 billion yearly, to $1.6 billion. Removed the planned 2% tax on new cars (1% used), although the current new car sales tax would increase from .5% to 2.25%. Removed indexing gas tax to inflation. Still in the bill are the big DMV fee increases, EV vehicle road use tax and delivery vehicle tax.
