Political staffer hosts homeless … things go awry fast

Amani Kelekele, then-chief of staff for Portland City Councilor Jamie Dunphy, felt compelled to do something about a chronic homeless woman in Portland who had multiple run in with law enforcement. Fearing that she might be arrested, he took her into his own home.  It turns out the woman had serious mental health issues.   Amani was trying to find a new place for her but she became hostile to any solution.   It got so bad, that he ended dropping her off at an empty campsite at Milo McIver State Park with groceries.  Meanwhile, there were social service staffers who had been working with the woman for a long time before she disappeared from the scene by being picked up by Amani.

The story is long and you can read more here.

Amani’s outreach reflects the flawed hopes of many Portland liberal policies on how to help the homeless.

– You cannot just dump cash on addicts/mentally abused homeless and expect a miracle.
– You cannot just move addicts/mentally abused homeless into hotel rooms and expect them to magically rebound.
– You cannot just unload groceries, products and clothes on addicts/mentally abused homeless and expect a miracle.

We need to let the police and social services do their job when it comes to a mental abused person.

P.S. We applaud the good heart of Amni Kelekelle, yet we discourage the progressive mindset behind his effort.
