The Right to Vote on the Gas Tax PAC (Senator Bruce Starr, Representative Ed Diehl, Jason Williams, Taxpayers Association of Oregon) just announced their unbelievable news of raising 150,000 signatures for the stop the gas tax referendum petition.

Instead of admitting that voters should have a say in her transportation plan, Kotek issued a statement saying their lives will be in danger if this gas tax petition makes the ballot.

KOIN-TV reports, “In a statement, Kotek warned that emergency funding to keep Oregon’s roads and bridges safe will be immediately suspended.”

Kotek’s statement read, “emergency funding that the legislature provided to keep Oregon’s roads, bridges, and transit systems safe and working will be suspended immediately.”

Oregon voters will not be threatened over taxes.

The Oregon budget just approved this year grows by double digits.  There is room for priority budgeting.   Asking government to take a haircut should not mean that people will die.

If people are dying for lack of funding, then why did Governor Kotek fly to Asia at a cost of nearly a quarter million dollars?  Why did Governor Kotek sign the bill giving $10 million to build a Portland mega-food court restaurant and tens of millions of lavish tax credit hand-outs for Hollywood film companies?

The best way to stand up to Governor Kotek’s budget threats is to gather more signatures for the stop the gas tax petition.
