Although the numbers will change as returns continue to come in, the early results show that Republican voters had an 8% advantage in turnout.

50% – Republican
42% – Democrat
33% – Independent
16% – NAVs

Even though it is common for Republican voters to lead in turnout, this is often only 1-2%. For an 8% bump, this is significant if it holds as returns come in. This is evidence that the candidates of state senator Christine Drazan and representative Ed Diehl have had an overwhelming positive effect on voter turnout. A Taxpayers Association of Oregon straw poll of the campaign revealed why voters supported their candidate. Christine Drazan supporters leaned towards statements like “best chance to defeat Kotek” and “She’s been fighting Kotek,” while Ed Diehl supporters leaned towards statements that read, “He is a man of integrity,” “He speaks for me,” and “He is for the people.” Simply put, these two candidates brought out the best in people from different perspectives.
