REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP STATEMENT ON 2008 CO-CHAIRS BUDGET

SALEM”” House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna (R-Roseburg) and Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day) had the following to say regarding 2008 spending proposals released by the Co-Chairs of the Joint Ways and Means Committee:

Sen. Ferrioli: “Given the clouds looming on the economic horizon, we should be cutting out waste in order to pay for these priorities, rather than scrounging amongst the couch cushions for a few extra pennies to spend. We are excited to see that shut-in Oregon seniors will have care in their homes and families can feel safer on Oregon roads thanks to 24/7 state trooper coverage, but those priorities should be paid for with cost-cutting measures so we can, cut taxes save for the lean times or stimulate family-wage jobs.

“Keep in mind, these are issues Republicans have been championing for a long time. It is too bad it took the political pressure of an election year to make these things happen, and rest assured we will continue to fight for them until they become a reality.”

Rep. Hanna: “Government spending in Salem is out of control. It’s no surprise this Legislature is now facing possible budget reductions. The Democrats spent $2.9 billion in new revenue in 2007, so it’s unfortunate we’re having to nickel and dime for a few key priorities that should’ve been addressed last session. Nonetheless, we’re pleased the Democrats are joining us in helping to pass these priorities, including 24/7 State Police coverage, “˜Big Look’ restoration, and Eastern Oregon water resources.”
