— Ballot Measures, state races below —Ballot Measures:

No on 71: Annual Sessions
– The Oregon Constitution stipulates regular legislative be held every other year. Amending it to allow the legislature meet every year will predictably double the amount of laws, regulations and taxes which are proposed every time the rascals get together in Salem.

No on 75: Casino Measure
– It is wrong for government to create a special exemption for the benefit of one single private gaming company, guaranteed to harm to varying degrees the 2,000 other smaller, taxpaying Oregon businesses which have come to depend on and built their business around lottery revenue to meet their overhead (and all live under the same set of rules without special exemptions).

No on 76: Lottery for wildlife
– We hold that it is very bad policy to dedicate any revenue stream to expenditures which are not related to the source. Much of Oregon’s current budget problems are a result of “dedicated spending” in which the hands of legislature are tied. Revenue for wildlife is indeed a discretionary expenditure and should come under periodic review during regular legislative sessions.

The key factor affecting our endorsement selections was whether or not a legislator had backed measures to increase taxes in the face of a recession. Therefore, we endorse no candidate who voted for Measures 66 and 67 (HB 3405, HB 2649).
