In a report by the Oregonian, the University of Portland, a private catholic university, has removed Robert Pamplin Jr.’s name from its School of Business. In a statement provided to the Oregonian, the university noted, “The association of Dr. Pamplin’s name with the University of Portland School of Business was subject to an agreement that has concluded.” No further details were provided.

The removal of Pamplin’s name is likely related to the scandal in which he and his company, R.B. Pamplin Corporation, settled a federal lawsuit concerning the illegal diversion of pension funds from his employees to purchase property across the state. Pamplin agreed to a settlement on December 26, 2024, which required him to sell his and the company’s properties identified by federal authorities as being acquired through the illegal use of the pension funds. All proceeds from these sales were to be directed towards restoring the pension fund.

Robert Pamplin Jr. was once regarded as one of Portland’s prominent businessmen, known for his significant contributions to the community through the R.B. Pamplin Corporation. A 1997 article from The Seattle Times highlighted his philanthropic efforts, including a $750,000 donation to combat hunger in Portland. Additionally, when the University of Portland faced financial difficulties and the threat of closure, charitable contributions from Pamplin helped the institution continue operating. In addition, Pamplin also provided financial support to Lewis and Clark University. His annual personal donations to Portland were estimated at around $3 million.
