The important May forecast shows that Oregon’s economy is slowing down its growth beyond what was forecasted.

This means the over-collected surplus tax revenue is shrinking and people’s expected Kicker Tax Refund is shrinking as well.  One very rough estimate, puts the average Oregonian taxpayer Kicker refund to drop from $500 to $600 to now in the $300 to $400 range.  A refund that taxpayers will be able to claim when they do their taxes next year in 2026.

As the economic forecast warns, the total amount of funds that has shrunk from the slowing economy is over $700 million from what lawmakers were expecting at the beginning of the year.

Will lawmakers make cuts?  Likely not.

Will lawmaker cut waste, fraud, abuse from government programs?  Likely not.

With $700 million less from lawmakers’ wish list, and with billion dollar obligations being demanded by PERS and ODOT means TAXES HIKES ARE COMING.

Lawmakers have an arsenal of tax increases ready.  There are property taxes, income taxes, gas taxes, car taxes, bike taxes, tire taxes, drink container taxes, beer-wine taxes, vaping taxes, RV taxes .. to name a few.

Expect the the debate on these taxes to resurface in the next 40+ days the Legislature has left in the Capitol building before Session ends.
