Kotek seeks gas tax vote by Labor Day

Capitol insiders are saying Oregon Governor Tina Kotek is pushing lawmakers to get a gas tax increase by Labor Day or soon after.   The failure of the $2 billion gas tax/road tax transportation plan has been a colossal blunder for the ages.    Kotek may try to get an agreement worked out in advance and then call a one/two day session to ram it through.   It could be called in August, or in early September.  The sooner Kotek gets this humiliation off of her desk the better for her.  This is because she is near the time she must announce her re-election plan for Governor for the 2026 election.

What size will the gas tax be?

During the 2025 6-month Legislative Session various plans ranged from 3-cent to 20-cents.  That is on top of 11 other taxes on cars, DMV fees, EVs, delivery vehicles.  Right now, Oregon gas prices have been around $4.00.  That could be the new normal if a big gas tax passes.   Don’t forget the Oregon state gas tax was increased 5% just last year alone.
