Sen. Drazan: They killed bill protecting kids from needles near school

Public Safety Takes a Backseat as Tina Kotek’s Allies Kill Bipartisan Bill Protecting Kids from Needles Near Schools

By Oregon State Senator Christine Drazan,

SALEM, Ore. – Senator Christine Drazan (R-Canby) today released the following statement after Senate Bill 1573, a broadly bipartisan bill that would have prohibited the distribution of needles within 2,000 feet of a school or child care facility, was killed by supermajority politicians who refused to put kids first.

“I am disappointed but not surprised that once again extreme ideology has prevailed over common sense and public safety in the Oregon Legislature. Senate Bill 1573 was a bipartisan bill to ensure that kids who walk to school don’t have to step over needles to get there. It would have stopped so-called harm reduction programs from handing out needles within 2,000 feet of a school or child care facility. Tina Kotek’s allies in Salem killed the bill today. We shouldn’t put the burdens of addiction on kids.

For two sessions, they’ve had the chance to act, and for two sessions, they’ve failed to protect kids. Oregonians deserves better.”
