Oregon halts CD licenses to noncitizens

Based on Trump recommendations, The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles stopped issuing Commercial Drivers Licenses and Learner’s Permits for non-citizens. The did not revoke current licenses but only decided to not renew or issue any new licenses.   This has caused a lot of debate since a few high-profile crashes nationwide involved drivers’ were not only not citizens but also lacked understanding of road signs.

&On April 12, 2024, commercial driver Harjiner Singh made an dangerous illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike, causing a crash that killed three people. Investigators found that Singh had been issued a CDL by two different states; California and Washington. Following the crash, a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration analysis revealed that Singh could only correctly answer 2 out of 12 basic English verbal questions. He could only identify 1 out of 4 standard road signs presented to him.
