Although they may collect enough signatures to place a ban on hunting and livestock in Oregon on the November ballot, even backers of the initiative don’t expect voters to approve it, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. Supported by animal rights activists, who want to criminalize everyday hunting, fishing and raising livestock, Initiative Petition 28 has received signatures of more than 142,000 voters who want the so-called People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions placed on the ballot. It would expand animal protection laws beyond dogs and cats to other animals.  So far-reaching are these laws, that many ranchers and fishermen and hunters predict it will destroy their livelihood and industry and devastate Oregon. So extreme is the measure that even Governor Kotek and Senator Ron Wyden oppose it, making it one of the most disliked measures in recent Oregon history.

To compensate for the tens of thousands of lost jobs, the measure creates a fund to help ranchers, farmers and others with retraining for other jobs.
