A bill approved by the Oregon House and Senate gives renters affected by the coronavirus pandemic more time to repay back-due rent, but it would leave landlords in a lurch.

Senate Bill 282A would extend the deadline for renters who were unable to pay their entire rent between April 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021. If passed, renters who owe their landlords money wouldn’t have to repay it until Feb. 28, 2022.

The bill also would prohibit landlords from denying rental applicants who have been evicted and reporting missed rent to credit agencies. It also would increase penalties on landlords who retaliate against delinquent tenants.

At the same time landlords are being asked to not collect rent, nearly 75% of government landlord funds have yet to be distributed to landlords.
