New York Times journalist and recent Oregon resident, Nicholas Kristof has raised over $1 million dollars for the Democrat primary in the race for governor. Most of the donations have come from out-of-state donors, including names such as Melinda Gates and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.
From this article: “One of his largest contributions of $50,000 came from Melinda Gates, the Seattle-based philanthropist and ex-wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates… Tom Bernthal, the fiancé of Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, also contributed $50,000. Actress Angelina Jolie’s family trust tossed in $10,000, and fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg, “Educated” memoirist Tara Westover and Cathy Sulzberger, sister of the New York Times’ publisher AG Sulzberger, all contributed $5,000.”
In Kristof’s book, Tightrope, he laments how America should be more like Europe in their welfare policies. Now we know why the interest among outsiders in Oregon.
