The Oregonian reports that this bill HB 4159 may get a late, last-minute surprise push during the final days of Session (ends March 10th).

Taxpayers are currently overwhelmed helping people who are migrating into Oregon from other nations —  if the State of Oregon puts out a 1-year free rent program, the news will spread like lightning and cause people to move here to take advantage of it and the overwhelmed services will get worse.

Around 2017, Multnomah County once put out a public promise to provide shelter for anyone who needed it — and very quickly their shelters were over-run with takers causing massive over-crowing.  Nearly a third of the people were from outside the County.   The County was putting people into hotels costing taxpayers $3,318 a month.   The County had to rescind their promise.   Let us stop reinventing failure.

• The State of Oregon just closed down a program that spent $30 million creating welcome hotels for illegal migrants.
• Already Oregon stands out as one of only 11 Sanctuary States which attracts people we cannot house.
• Oregon allows longer welfare benefits than other states and is called “Welfare Utopia” by Atlantic magazine.
• Among homeless across America Portland is referred to as “Freelandia” for the the free stuff they hand out.
• When Biden pulled out of Afghanistan in 2021, Oregon was among only a few states to volunteer to accept refugees (chart below) — even though the State was suffering from the #2 worst in nation for homeless families.  This means Oregon was actively recruiting more migrants even though Oregon had no place to house them.

We do not see in the bill any vetting of recipients.  There is no difference in the bill between a refugee from Afghanistan who risked their lives helping translate for our soldiers and legally came to Oregon verses an unvetted person who illegally crossed the border who could be a human trafficker.
