Deremer: Funds for emergencies, border security

Congresswoman Lori Chavez-Deremer
Press Release,

The U.S. House of Representatives passed appropriations legislation to fund the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Department of State for Fiscal Year 2025. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05) supported the proposals, which included Community Project Funding for the 5th District and key investments to secure the southern border and combat the fentanyl crisis.

“During a roundtable in Central Oregon earlier this year, I heard from emergency response personnel and local leaders about the critical need for an emergency operations center to better prepare for natural disasters like wildfires and earthquakes. I was glad to help secure $2 million for CORE3 in the Homeland Security appropriations bill to support emergency preparedness, and I’ll keep working to ensure it’s signed into law,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “Additionally, working to protect our national security by securing the border and combating the fentanyl crisis will continue to be one of my top priorities. While these bills aren’t perfect, they are a starting point for negotiations with the Senate and reflect the dire need for funding to improve border security and combat illicit drug smuggling to keep our communities safe.”

The DOD (H.R. 8774), DHS (H.R. 8752), and State Department (H.R. 8771) appropriations bills included several of Chavez-DeRemer’s priorities, including a Community Project Funding request to improve emergency preparedness in Central Oregon and investments in border security:

  • $2 million for the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council to complete the construction of the CORE3 center, which is the only proposed emergency coordination center planned for Central or Eastern Oregon.
  • $300 million for border security technology and $600 million for the construction of a southern border wall.
  • $242 million above the president’s budget request for drug interdiction and counternarcotic operations.
  • Increasing funding for the National Guard Counterdrug Program.
  • 4.5% pay raise for all military personnel.
  • $500 million for the Israeli Cooperative Missile Defense Programs to include the Iron Dome.
  • $200 million to counter Chinese aggression by supporting Taiwan’s international security cooperation programs and prioritizing defense articles and services to Taiwan.
