Sen. Boquist: Killing owls, forecasting 2025 Legislature

By Oregon State Senator Brian Boquist

Highlights, excerpts from Sen. Boquist newsletter

— Oregon Capitol Chronicle.  “Plan finalized to kill thousands of barred owls around Northwest. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hopes that shooting the invasive owls will help the survival of native spotted owls. … The killing would be done by “professional removal specialists” who meet certain training and competency requirements.”  Not only is the U.S. Government sure it is God and Mother Nature but killing is now called ‘removal’ to sound more humane.  So will the USG be removing humans as well?

— Oregon Capitol Chronicle.  “National election forecaster predicts Democratic supermajorities in Oregon House, Senate.  CNalysis, the country’s only elections forecasting group that forecasts legislative elections, is predicting a 39-21 Democratic majority in the state House and an 18-11 split in the state Senate.” Well this is better than 40/20 and 20/10 but would seem to mean IP-17 the tax rebate passes as well?  Also meaning status quo i.e. higher taxes and fees coming in 2025 to all Oregonians?

— Koin 6 News.  “New Seasons workers plan one-day strike for late September.” Obviously, the economy is not doing as well as some say in Salem and Washington DC.

— Your Oregon News.  “Fred Meyer employees strike as federal merger trial continues.  Officials with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 said the strike over unfair labor practices is necessary to convince Kroger to agree on its wage and benefit demands.”  Always odd there are strikes at the same time Democrat incumbents claim prosperity in Shangri-La.

— OPB.  “Close to $1 billion could be sent to Oregon taxpayers thanks to unique ‘kicker’ law.  At the same time, economists warned that the state is aware more layoffs are likely, particularly in industries Oregon is especially dependent on, including the footwear and apparel and semiconductor industries.” The State Economist said only half the bad news was baked into the forecast so get ready.
