Man who shopped with mother’s severed head released

A Clackamas man who beheaded his mother has been released from the state mental-health hospital and sent to a community treatment center.

In 2018 the man beheaded his mother, and then went into a grocery store with the head, and stabbed a store employee.  It was a grizzly rampage Oregon has rarely seen.

He had been at the state mental-health hospital for about 6 years.

During his review, it was mentioned that he was watching YouTube videos on serial killers, but the incidences were excused as accidental or inconsequential.

Scott Healy, first assistant Clackamas County district attorney, said authorities are taking a chance on his early release to the treatment center.   Our feelings exactly.   Society is taking the risk for this decision.   When a man kills a family member, certain dangerous boundaries are breached.  When a man tries to kill random innocent people a second different dangerous boundary is breached.   We hope this man is reformed and will be further reformed in the treatment center (which is a locked facility), but risks are being taken.  As we reported earlier with the serial thief who was released early and struck again in a year — Oregon has too many examples of early release that have gone bad.
