Our humorous help to local elected officials (Measure 34-340)

On the Sherwood local ballot there is Measure 34-340 which would allow city elected officials to utilize points earned on official travel.  This is a simple request that the Taxpayers Association of Oregon supports. We submitted this light-hearted argument of support in the local County Voters Pamphlet.

Conference travel explained:

• Wait in line for bus in airport parking lot
• Wait in line to check luggage
• Wait in line to be body searched by TSA
• Wait in line to get liquid (TSA made you discard)
• Wait in line to board plane
• Sit in smallest seat of your life in plane
• Wait in line for restroom
• Wait in line to exit plane
• Wait in line to get luggage
• Wait in line for taxi
• Wait in line to register at hotel
• Wait in line to register for conference
• Eat dry rubber chicken meals at conference
• Repeat all 12-steps upon leaving

It would not be too much to ask that we allow our public officials engaging in conference travel who are representing Oregon to have access to the same opportunities that everyone else has when they travel by allowing them to make use of any points/benefits from the travel itself. Conference travel can be hard. Let them utilize existing programs to assist them.
