Oregon Ballot Measure 115 would empower Oregon’s elected officials with the ability to impeach statewide officials and join 49 other states with impeachment powers.

Critics of impeachment powers say that the recall petition process is sufficient to remove a corrupt statewide officials and that impeachment power is not needed.

There are problems with this theory.  First of all, it can take as much as one to two years to gather enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot, far out-living the moment and the term of the official being recalled.  Sometimes elected officials are at their worst during the end of their lame-duck session.   During this period, politicians feel that they can get away with anything, and many times they have.  Measure 115’s impeachment powers would be ready at all times for any such scenario.

Also, what if the statewide official who goes rogue happens to be the Secretary of State?  If the Secretary of State abuses their office by mishandling an election, then how do we expect voters to put their trust in a recall where the Secretary of State controls the recall election?   Measure 115 has an answer for this with impeachment powers.

What if the statewide official committing abuses is the Attorney General and it is within the jurisdiction of the Attorney General to investigate the abuse?   Measure 115 has an answer for this with impeachment powers.

Oregon Ballot Measure 115 is a sensible measure.  Voters should vote Yes.
