#1.  Senior citizen property tax cut

Senate Joint Resolution 1: Senate Rules Committee. 1:00 PM on Senate Joint Resolution 1, Freezes property tax assessments for owner-occupied residences owned by Oregonians aged 65+.  The bill allows the Legislature to set a tax freeze cut amount which requires voter approval.

SJR 1 reads, “Proposes an amendment to the Oregon Constitution directing the Legislative Assembly to enact a property tax relief program for the owner-occupied primary residences of certain seniors. Refers the proposed amendment to the people for their approval or rejection at the next regular general election.”

#2. Food stamps for migrants, called “Food for All”

Senate Bill 611 is up for a hearing this Tuesday in the Senate Committee On Human Services 03/25/2025 8:00 AM, HR D.  Senate Bill 611 creates a new program called “Food for All” which extends food stamp benefits to non-citizens, migrants and others. With food stamps these recipients can spend the money on snack food, candy, ice cream and drink mixer items which has made the program famous for abuse. We are concerned that this bill along with other benefits that are given to non-citzens like:

– Free hotel stays for non-citizens
– Free $30,000 grants for first time non-citizen homebuyers
– Free $1,000 monthly checks for homeless youth that are non-citizens
– Free bonus $120 summer checks for groceries

#3. Makes Lunar New Year a paid holiday

House Bill 3595 will be having a hearing in House Committee On Rules. Monday 03/24/2025 8:00 AM, HR C, State Capitol

House Bill 3595 would make a Lunar New Year a state legal holiday and injects this day in the Oregon statute that governs the 10 other state holidays that are paid time off for government employees, so we assume this is indeed a new paid off holiday for government employees.  You can testify online here (hit submit testimony tab).
