Study bill on (raising) property taxes gets vote

Today, the Oregon Senate Finance and Revenue Committee held a speedy last-minute hearing on House Bill 2321.    Under House Bill 2321, the State is ordered to “study” the two property tax limits we have, Measure 5 and Measure 50.   When politicians conduct studies — it is meant to craft a new tax or regulation.  A decade ago, the Legislature voted for a bill to “study” a carbon tax.   After spending nearly a quarter of a million tax dollars, the government panel created the single worst Carbon tax proposal in the nation.   Lawmakers then tried to ram it through the Legislature — but were derailed by Republican lawmaker walkout protests at the time.

HB 2321 was voted out of Committee and will now head to the Senate floor.

HB 2321 reads, “Directs the Legislative Revenue Officer to analyze and prepare a report on the current state property tax system and options to modernize the state property tax system. Requires the officer to submit the report to the interim committees of the Legislative Assembly related to revenue no later than December 1, 2026.”
