How Oregon became welfare queen (SNAP #3)

Oregon is the #3 food stamp (SNAP) user in America as a percentage of people on the program.

This means the government shutdown disruption on SNAP benefits will hurt Oregon more compared to most states.

Oregon State Government has worked hard over the years to get people enrolled and consequently dependent on government services.

In 2011, the Obama administration gave our Oregon Health Department a $5 million award for being among the best in the nation for signing up the most new people on welfare. The Department was so proud that they issued a press release about it at the time — until public backlash forced them to take it down.

Oregon keeps finding ways to offer benefits not found in other states.   The State offers benefits to non-citizens not available in most states.

Multnomah County handed out $500 gift cash cards to the homeless during COVID.

Over a $1.5 billion has been spent on 105,000 non-citizens and their health benefits in Oregon.

The Department of Human Services did a statewide public campaign seeking people to give $120 monthly grocery benefits for the summer. We wrote at the time:

The State of Oregon is desperately trying to give away free $120.00 to over 10,000 families as part of their Summer EBT program. The idea is that many students get free breakfast and lunch in their local public school, but when school is out, the government feels compelled to hand them food money for the summer — even if people are not asking for it. Could a High School student not work for the summer for one week to earn $120? Now, they don’t have to. Summer is nearly over, and now the Oregon Department of Human Services is on a race and media campaign to hand-out the free food money to people for whom they have no idea exist (in the way that they think they do). They are seeking to over 10,000 families to qualify.
