Oregon icons like Powell’s Books can’t compete

Oregon famous business Powell’s Books just announced their fourth layoff this year.

They said it was because of rising costs.  Those rising costs include 10 new tax increases Portland businesses faced in the past few years (property, gas, business, income, business license, CEO taxes).

Powell’s Books also complained of losing sales.   At the same time of declining customers Portland politicians raised street parking fees and doubled the Portland Uber tax.  Last year, Portland politicians pushed a 10-cent gas tax increase. Portland is taxing away a business’ foot traffic.

Such a book store cannot prosper when they compete with online book sellers from states with low taxes.

These businesses just can’t compete.
