Oregon House Speaker Julie Fahey and Senate President Rob Wagner have introduced a bill to move the vote on the gas tax from the November General Election to the May Primary.   They aim to move it to an election where fewer voters show-up.

Chief petitioner to the gas tax referendum State Senator Bruce Starr told KGW, “I get it’s political. The last thing the (Democratic) majority wants is to have this on the November election … In an off-year election, non-presidential election, somewhere around 68-70% of Oregonians vote. In the primary, it’s about a third.”

Chief petitioner State Representative Ed Diehl said, “Do not let them deny your voice, you have a constitutional right to vote on this. We said we want it on the November ballot”

Chief Petitioner Jason Williams said, “First, politicians and Governor ramrod the gas tax through the 2025 Legislature where it failed, only to have Governor Kotek ramrod it again through a Special Legislative Session, only to have Governor Kotek delay signing the bill in order to block voters from launching a referendum campaign, only to know have Kotek try again to block voters by pushing the election away from the popular General Election.  This has been an entire year of thwarting, cheating, blocking and disenfranchising voters.”
