+83% hotel tax for wildlife passes

HB 4134 raises the hotel tax by 83% in order to fund wildlife programs and forestry.   The hotel/lodging tax is supposed to be dedicated to promoting tourism — now it is promoting animal life.

The tax has passed the House and Senate and now awaits the Governor’s signature.

Remember:

• Breweries are closing in large numbers (29 closed in 2025).
• International travel is dropping (some ares see 40% drop).
A dozen award winning and acclaimed restaurants closed in Portland in last 5 years (Paley’s Place,  Pok Pok, Jinju Patisserie, Clyde Common, Castagna, Bark City BBQ, Toki, Dame, Malka, Ned Ludd, Revelry, Bar King)
• Legacy festivals are closing due to rising costs, customer drops; — Cycle Oregon event closed after 33 years, Feast Portland (2012–2022),Oregon Brewers Festival (1988–2023), The Big Float (2012–2022), ArtQuake, Rossi Farms Barn Bash (1998–2019), Portland Polish Festival, Red Bull Flugtag, Bend Brew Fest after 20 years.

Now, we are smacking hotels with higher taxes.
