Fed may hit Oregon hard over welfare error rates

Officials in several dozen will scramble to find millions of dollars to help low-income people afford food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, according to the Associated Press. Or they may drop the program entirely. But nine states—those will fewer errors of overpaying recipients—won’t need to contribute anything to the federally funded program. Under President Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, states must begin sharing in the costs for the SNAP food stamp program beginning in October 2027, with those states showing the highest error rates 75 percent toward administrative costs (rather than 50 percent) while those with lowest rates will be exempt. Already, the number of people receiving SNAP benefits (37 million) has dropped by 11 percent—or 5 million people—after a law signed in July required adult recipients to work, volunteer or train for jobs.
