Lawmakers ask for help over $780 million surplus

All of Oregon Senators and Representatives were given a survey by the Senate President, Peter Courtney, and Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek, on how to spend the $780 million unallocated amount from Congress’ American Rescue Plan Act.

Bend Bulletin reports, “Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek and Senate President Peter Courtney each sent all members in their respective chambers a two-question survey recently.The questions: What would you like to spend money on? And how much?”

Oregon is getting $2.6 billion from the Act, of which half ($1.3 billion) is going right into existing services and $520 million into a reserve fund.

Please note, that the Senate President and House Speaker asked their own members how to spend the funds, and not the public.

The American Rescue Plan Act was designed to help states deal with COVID-19. Will politicians help compensate businesses for their loss due to the lockdown since Oregon businesses suffered the nation’s 3rd longest lockdown last year and the nation’s second longest lockdown last winter?
