Governor race shake-up: State Treasurer announces

Oregon Treasurer Tobias Read has announced a run for governor.

Read, a Democrat, was elected State Treasurer in 2016 and reelected in 2020. He is prohibited by term limits from seeking reelection to that office.

Before becoming Treasurer, Read represented the Beaverton area from 2006 to 2016 as State Representative.

Read joins a crowded field of Democrats seeking the state’s highest office, as Gov. Kate Brown cannot run for reelection. House Speaker Tina Kotek (D-Portland), Yamhill County Commissioner Casey Kulla and Brownsville cabinetmaker Patrick Starnes have declared a stake in the race. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum are considering runs for governor.  This is the most crowded field running for the Democrat primary in decades.
