Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson and Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt are making waves with a hefty $52 billion lawsuit against energy companies.  The county claims these companies have been pumping out greenhouse gases and spreading some questionable info about climate change. They’re asking for $50 million for the heat dome chaos, $1.5 billion for future climate troubles, and a cool $50 billion to prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws their way next.

They’re pretty steamed about the 2021 heat dome that turned Portland into a 116-degre oven and claimed 69 lives. Now the county has added two more defendants to their lawsuit roster: NW Natural (who everyone has heard of) and the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (who almost no one has heard of).

Why target a research institute that almost no one has heard of? Well, here’s a fun fact: the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine is run by Art Robinson, currently a Republican state senator (Dist. 2, Cave Junction) and former chair of the Oregon Republican Party.  This seems extremely political for a county government to sue a State Senator by billions of dollars.

It must be said that during the 2021 heat wave that killed so many Oregonians, that Multnomah County/Portland libraries and recreation centers refused to let heat victimized people into their nice empty government air conditioned buildings.   Oregon’s Governor at the time, Kate Brown, spent the entire day at a winery fundraiser.
