Union strike, taxes help close 70-yr old Fred Meyers

Last year at this time, Fred Meyer employees went on strike and seriously hurt 28 locations — including the Portland Gateway Fred Meyers.

Also since last year, Portland went on a property tax increase binge as well as enacted a 10-cent gas tax hike.  Just months ago, Portland pushed through a billion dollar property tax hike for schools.   Just weeks ago, Portland City Hall jacked up parking fees and doubled the Uber tax.

A full year of non-stop financial blows both from within by workers and from the outside by politicians hurt the Gateway Fred Meyers too much.

Now those union workers don’t have a job.

Also, Kotek signed a bill giving strikers jobless pay — so now strikers risk being paid to destroy their employer and eliminate their own jobs.

Don’t forget that Wal-Mart closed all Portland stores.  And the Portland-raised progressive Green Zebra grocery chain also closed all stores in Portland.
