Bill voids local vote for new gas taxes

The ever-watching Oregon Roundup journalist Jeff Eager is reporting that a pending amendment to a bill up on Monday contains language to eliminate the current law requiring a public vote on all local gas taxes.   Right now state law mandates that any city or county must get a public vote on any local gas tax increase.

The bill is HB 4007 (which talks about bike helmets and micromobility bikes) but the new language is amendment #23 seen here.  It appears that the politicians are trying to hide the amendment #23 among 20+ other amendments so the public will not notice when they add the toxic amendment to the existing HB 4007 which looks harmless.   Putting a sneaky pro-tax amendment into an innocent unrelated bill is a dirty political trick.  They also announced this amendment on Friday for a hearing on Monday.

People can testify early on the bill by opposing “HB 4007-23” to reflect the amendment.  Click here at hit testimony tab.
