The tri-county METRO regional government approved a seven billion multi-year payroll tax ($250 million a year).

The payroll tax will be a .75% tax on payroll on workers who work in businesses with more than 24 employees.

Government employees will be exempt from the payroll tax out of concerns for the legality of the tax.

Much of the funds will go for a billion dollar light rail project so the expensive train can move Oregonians to one of the most expensive shopping malls in the state — the Tigard Bridgeport Mall.

METRO hopes to leverage $2 billion in Federal Funds with the tax.

The tax is referred to the November ballot for voters to decide.
